Is the upcoming 2024-25 campaign the Oilers' best opportunity to win a sixth Stanley Cup?
After a brutal beginning to 2023-24, Edmonton went on a historic run that ended with a tough loss in game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final against Florida last spring. In the off-season, the Oilers brought nearly everybody back, plus they added veteran wingers Jeff Skinner and Viktor Arvidsson, and rookie forward Matt Savoie. Edmonton might be able to get over the hump this time around, but looming salary-cap questions may derail this fast-charging train. Superstar Leon Draisaitl signed a long extension over the summer and Connor McDavid (whose contract has two more seasons left) is next to get a massive long-term extension.
Can this squad remain competitive if they spend $30 million per year on two players?
